Host

The device in which the CA application resides. Can be an STB, a PC, a PDA, or other.

Host data

Host data is application specific data that is sent to a host using an ECM or EMM as a secure transport mechanism.

Hijacking

The process of making services of DTV operator A accessible to consumers possessing STBs provided or sponsored by operator B. This way, operator A can escape the cost of providing or sponsoring the consumers with STBs.

Homes passed

Number of residential units that have been "passed" by cable plant or the number of homes in a defined geographic area within the footprint of satellite transmission.

HDCP

Short for High-Bandwidth Digital Content Protection. Protection technology controlling digital audio and video content over DVI or HDMI connections. HDCP is licensed by Digital Content Protection LLC.

Head-end

The system receiving the various program source signals, processing the signals and rebroadcasting them to subscribers.

Hash function

A one-way hash function - a function that produces a short unique checksum of a message that cannot be reversed to the original message. This is an important basic function used in signatures and fingerprints.
