DRM

Digital Rights Management (DRM) is a system to protect and securely deliver content by subscription or individual request for playback on a computer, portable device, or network device.

Digital media files can be easily copied and distributed without any reduction in quality. As a result, digital media files are being widely distributed on the Internet today, through both authorized and unauthorized distribution channels. Piracy is a concern when security measures are not in place to protect the content.

Content providers can protect and manage their rights by creating licenses for each digital media file. In a DVB context, conditional access security technology is used to control the access to broadcast content (including video and audio, interactive services, etc.) through the transmission of encrypted signals and the programmable regulation of their decryption by a system such as smart cards.

There is DRM support included in the conditional access system for secure delivery of content to traditional TV sets. For delivery to other household devices inside the DRM domain, Conax is currently working with industry leaders (e.g. Microsoft) to establish a secure transition from the Conax conditional access domain to the given DRM domains.
