EPG

An Electronic Program Guide (EPG) provides the consumer with on-screen information about scheduled television programs.

EPGs are the electronic equivalent of printed television program guides. The electronic version enables viewers to navigate and select current and upcoming programs by using their remote control. Navigation (searching) can typically be done based on time, titles, channels, genres, etc.

The client side of the EPG is implemented in the STB software. This application reads the relevant information in the broadcast and presents such to the user. Information is typically transmitted in DVB PSI/SI tables.

The server side of the EPG handles the collection, formatting, scheduling and playout of EPG data. In addition to program schedule information, EPG data can contain additional information about e.g. on-demand services, parental control ratings, pay-per-view purchasing and PVR recording options.

Conax conditional access solutions support all EPGs that are compliant with the DVB PSI/SI standards. This gives the digital television provider the freedom of choice when it comes to selecting the EPG for its operation. For non-standardised features and systems, some integration work may be anticipated.
